This page explains how the content on Boiler Answers is researched, written, checked and kept up to date. It applies to every article and page on the site.

Our sources

We work from primary sources wherever one exists. We do not copy other advice websites, and we do not repeat a claim just because it appears widely online.

Type of information Where we get it
Boiler models, outputs, efficiency (ErP) ratings, guarantee lengths Manufacturers' own websites, installation and user manuals, technical data sheets
Fault code meanings and manufacturer-approved user steps The manufacturer's manual for that model range
Who may work on gas, how to check an engineer Gas Safe Register, Health and Safety Executive
Building Regulations, flue and ventilation rules, notification gov.uk Approved Documents (Part L, Part J and others)
Grants, schemes and eligibility rules gov.uk and Ofgem scheme pages, with the date we checked them
Energy prices, running costs, savings Ofgem price cap, Energy Saving Trust
Installation and repair prices Published installer price lists and online quote tools, trade merchant prices, cross-checked and presented as ranges

Every article ends with a sources list so you can check the facts yourself.

How we research and write

  1. Plan. Each article answers one clearly defined question and sits in one of our ten topic clusters, so that two articles never compete to answer the same thing.
  2. Research. We gather the facts from the sources above. Brand facts (models, kW ranges, guarantees) come only from the manufacturer. Grant details come only from gov.uk or Ofgem.
  3. Draft. Content is researched and drafted with the help of AI tools, working from our research notes and style rules.
  4. Review. A member of the editorial team reads every article before publication, checks facts against the sources, removes anything that cannot be verified, and makes sure the safety rules below have been followed.
  5. Publish and maintain. Articles carry a "Last updated" date and are reviewed on the schedule described below.

Our use of AI

We want to be transparent about this: Boiler Answers uses AI tools to help research and draft articles. AI tools help us structure information, write first drafts and keep the style consistent. They do not decide what is true. Facts, figures and safety steps are checked by the editorial team against the sources listed in each article, and anything that cannot be traced to a reliable source is removed.

The byline on every article is "Boiler Answers Editorial Team". We do not invent named experts, engineers or authors, and we do not attach fictional credentials to our content.

No fictional experts, reviews or tests

  • We have not personally tested the boilers we write about, and we never claim to have done so. Our brand and model guides summarise manufacturer specifications and commonly reported strengths and weaknesses.
  • We do not publish customer reviews, star ratings based on invented data, or quotes from made-up installers or homeowners.
  • We do not publish statistics we cannot source.
  • Our comparisons include brands and installers with whom we have no commercial relationship.

Prices and dates

  • All prices are given as ranges, with the factors that move them (boiler type, output, brand tier, location, complexity of the job) and a real source.
  • Every article shows a "Last updated" date so you can judge how current the figures are.
  • Cost articles are reviewed at least once a year, and sooner if there is a significant change in the market.
  • Grant and scheme articles are updated when the scheme itself changes, and always link to the official government checker rather than assessing your eligibility ourselves.
  • We never promise a specific quote or an unrealistically low "from" price.

Our safety principles

Boilers are gas appliances, and this shapes everything we publish.

  • We only describe steps that a layperson can safely carry out: topping up the pressure via the filling loop, resetting the boiler, thawing a frozen condensate pipe, adjusting a thermostat, bleeding a radiator.
  • Opening the boiler casing, replacing parts and any work on the gas supply are only for a Gas Safe registered engineer. Our troubleshooting, pressure, servicing and replacement articles each carry a clear "stop and call an engineer" box.
  • If you smell gas or suspect carbon monoxide, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 before doing anything else.
  • We do not cover boiler insurance, boiler cover, finance or credit, legal advice, or the medical side of carbon monoxide exposure. These are areas where you should speak to a qualified professional directly.

Commercial content

Some articles contain affiliate links. Our commercial partners never see articles before publication, cannot ask for changes, and cannot buy a place in a comparison. Affiliate links are marked, every page with one carries a disclosure at the top, and the full arrangement is explained in our affiliate disclosure.

How to report an error

If you find something wrong - a price that is out of date, a fault code meaning that does not match your manual, a broken link, a safety step you think is unwise - please tell us. Email hello@boileranswers.co.uk with:

  • the address of the page,
  • what you believe is wrong, and
  • if possible, where we can check the correct information.

How corrections are handled

  1. We acknowledge your report, normally within five working days.
  2. We check the point against the original source. If we were wrong, we fix the article and update its "Last updated" date.
  3. Where a correction changes the meaning of an article in a material way - for example a safety step or a grant eligibility rule - we add a short correction note to the article.
  4. Minor fixes such as typos or formatting are made without a note.

We do not remove articles because a company dislikes them. We will correct them if they are wrong.
