Boiler Answers publishes general information about gas boilers, heating systems and related costs in the United Kingdom. It is written for a general audience and is not professional advice. It is not a substitute for an inspection of your own boiler and heating system by a qualified engineer, and it does not take account of your particular circumstances, property or appliance.

Nothing on the site creates a contract, duty of care or client relationship between you and us. Before acting on anything you read here, you should check it against your boiler's own manual and, where appropriate, take advice from a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Gas safety

Gas boilers can be dangerous if worked on incorrectly. In the United Kingdom it is a legal requirement that anyone who works on a gas appliance is on the Gas Safe Register.

  • Our articles describe only those steps that a layperson can safely carry out, such as checking the pressure gauge, topping up pressure through the filling loop, resetting the boiler, thawing a frozen condensate pipe or adjusting a thermostat. You carry out any such step at your own risk, and you should stop if you are unsure or if your boiler's manual says otherwise.
  • Never remove the boiler casing, replace parts or touch the gas supply yourself. That work must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
  • If you smell gas, or suspect a gas leak or carbon monoxide, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 (free, 24 hours) before doing anything else.
